Membership

Active worshippers at EBC are either "adherents" or "members."  An adherent is someone who has made EBC their church home and are part of the church family but not made the commitment to membership.  Members decide and vote on issues that concern the church such as the yearly budget, the calling of pastors and other issues by Canadian law that require membership votes.

Certain positions of leadership within EBC are limited to those who have become church members.

All members and adherents who wish to serve in the church must agree in writing with the Church Constitution and by-laws of EBC.  They must also have been baptized by immersion in water.

Baptism

Baptism is a command given directly to us by Jesus Christ in Matthew 28: 19-20.  Baptism is a necessary act of obedience as a believer (it is not optional).  While there is controversy in the church of Jesus Christ as to the proper form of baptism (i.e. infant baptism, water poured over the head), as Baptists we believe and hold to baptism by complete immersion in water (baptism literally means "to dip or immerse").

Baptism has spiritual significance as a direct and public identification with Christ in His death, burial and resurrection (Romans 6:3-5).  It is a public statement that you have died to self and come alive in Christ (Ephesians 2:1-8).

Baptism does not add to or save (make right with God) the one being baptized (Ephesians 2:9-10).  It is an act of obedience to Christ.
